Melatonin is the body's own substance responsible for sleep regulation. Melatonin supplementation is especially suitable for busy people, heavily trained athletes and people who travel frequently. This product is the result of cooperation with the leading Melatonin specialist in the Czech Republic.
Melatonin is the body's own substance (the so-called sleep hormone), which is found in many organisms, including mammals. Its levels are strongly dependent on the alternation of light and dark. The main site of its production in humans is in the pineal gland, from where it is released into the bloodstream. Melatonin is one of the most important sleep regulators. However, the ability to produce it gradually decreases with increasing age. This may be considered one of the reasons for the increased incidence of insomnia in older age and in people with reduced levels of melatonin in the blood.
Why is it advisable to take melatonin?
Sleep regulator
Regulation of melatonin levels is provided by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, which influences the pineal gland via neurotransmitters. Most of the physiological functions of melatonin are mediated by membrane receptors. The main regulator is the alternation of light and dark. During the day, light suppresses endogenous melatonin synthesis. Artificial light at night also suppresses melatonin synthesis. In the case of repeated exposure to light at night, there is increased melatonin synthesis in the morning.
Sleep hormone
The hormone is produced by the pineal gland (the supra-brain, i.e., part of the mesencephalon) and is most commonly localized in the brain, related neuro-organs, and sex organs. The starting substance for melatonin synthesis is the essential amino acid tryptophan. Melatonin is also produced in plants, where it functions as a defense against oxidative stress. Based on its chemical structure, melatonin can be classified as a phenolic hormone along with serotonin and catecholamines.
The importance of sleep
The fundamental importance of sleep is the regeneration of rational functions. These abilities are essential for thinking and controlling the organism. Sleep is also important for the so-called plasticity of neurons. This is essential in the process of memory formation, both short and long term. Thus, poor quality sleep leads to impaired learning. At the same time, speed and accuracy also decrease. For athletes, sleep is especially important because of muscle recovery, growth hormone flushing, muscle growth and so on. Every professional athlete realizes the importance of quality sleep.
