Iron is involved in normal energy metabolic processes, contributes to the normal formation of haemoglobin and participates in the normal transfer of oxygen in the body. Iron and vitamin B12 contribute to the normal formation of red blood cells and play a role in cell division.

Folic acid is also involved in cell division, contributes to normal blood formation and during pregnancy is involved in the growth of maternal tissues.

Red meat, fish, legumes and dark green leafy vegetables, for example, contain significant amounts of iron. In foods of animal origin, most iron is present as part of complex proteins such as haemoglobin, which plays a role in oxygen transport. Haemoglobin consists of the protein part globin and the component haem. Iron is found in the porphyrin ring of heme, to which oxygen can bind.

In foods of plant origin, iron is found in a different way, not as part of the heme. This difference affects the iron absorption properties, with the result that iron from foods of animal origin has better bioavailability than iron from plant origin. Although many other factors are critical for iron absorption, all can be favourably influenced.

This is where vitamin C comes in. As well as helping to protect cells from oxidative stress, it also increases iron absorption, which is why we have added this active ingredient to our recipe.

Vitamin B12 or cobalamin is mainly found in foods of animal origin, such as meat, fish, dairy products and eggs, so those who follow a vegan diet should make sure to get enough vitamin B12. Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is found in many foods, with significant amounts in dark green leafy vegetables, legumes and nuts. In our product, folic acid is present in the form of active calcium L-methylfolate.
