Effect on sports performance
As is generally known, during heavy training the body uses its maximum capacity of oxygen consumption. Mechanism of action of nitrate
In beetroot (and other green leafy vegetables), inorganic nitrate (NO3-) is found, which in humans is converted to nitrite (NO2-) and circulates in the blood after ingestion. When oxygen is limited, NO2- is then converted by the body into nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that plays an important role in the vascular system.
Natural vs synthetic
Nitrates can be obtained from both natural sources (e.g. beetroot) and synthetically. There are several negative messages circulating about synthetic nitrates, be it increased toxicity (Mayo Clinic) or the potential threat of cancer (the latter, however, is mostly associated with nitrites rather than nitrates). Natural beetroot nitrates have no toxicity or other risk.
