Carbohydrates are involved in restoring normal muscle function (contraction) after high-intensity and/or prolonged exercise that leads to muscle fatigue and depletion of skeletal muscle glycogen stores. The beneficial effect is achieved when a total of 4 g/kg body weight of carbohydrate is consumed from any source, after high-intensity and/or prolonged exercise leading to muscle fatigue and depletion of skeletal muscle glycogen stores, which should be taken in several doses during the first 4 hours but not longer than 6 hours.
