The basic ingredient of the dietary supplement Algastin is the natural antioxidant carotenoid astaxanthin, a substance that occurs naturally in the flesh of salmon, shrimp or lobster, or flamingos, for example. Astaxanthin causes the typical pink to orange to red colouration of these animals. However, the highest content of astaxanthin can be found in the unicellular freshwater alga Haematococcus pluvialis, which uses this substance as a protection against UV radiation. It is from this algae that the substance is currently extracted. Astaxanthin is the strongest known antioxidant and supplementation with astaxanthin is suitable for athletes, people who spend a lot of time in direct sunlight or people working in stressful environments.
