Melatonin is a substance inherent to the body (called the sleep hormone) that is found in many organisms, including mammals. Its levels are strongly dependent on the alternation of light and dark. The main site of its production in humans is in the pineal gland, from where it is released into the bloodstream. Melatonin is one of the most important sleep regulators. However, the ability to produce it gradually decreases with increasing age. This may be considered one of the reasons for the increased incidence of insomnia in older age and in people with reduced levels of melatonin in the blood.
