Liposomes are made from pure phospholipids isolated from sunflower lecithin. They can vary in size from a few nanometres to tens of micrometres. When combined with water, phospholipids form microscopic structures with a water-filled cavity in the middle, surrounded by a phospholipid shell. The water in the middle of the phospholipid can then dissolve other molecules, such as a vitamin or glutathione, which we need to easily absorb into the body. And while hydrophilic (water-attracting) molecules can be kept inside the encapsulated core, hydrophobic (water-repelling) substances can dissolve into the phospholipid membrane itself - in this way, liposomes can transport both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. And it is these unique properties that make them useful both to Mother Nature, e.g. in breast milk, and to specialist manufacturers, e.g. in the production of drugs or dietary supplements.
The main benefit of using liposomes for micronutrient transport is that the liposomes themselves are not disturbed in any way by the digestion process as they pass through the digestive tract
. Inthe case of conventional food supplements, the body often breaks down many complex molecules before they are absorbed, or simply does not absorb them easily enough, or subsequently metabolises and degrades them by the liver, so that the overall availability is greatly reduced.

Thephospholipid bilayer of the liposome is able to fuse with other bilayers such as the cell wall itself - and in this way the contents of the liposome (vitamins or other beneficial substances) are then transported directly into the cells.
