Leucine, isoleucine and valine belong to the group of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). BCAA are among the 9 amino acids that are essential for the human body, i.e. that the body cannot create on its own. The only source of these amino acids is our daily diet or nutritional supplements. Branched chain amino acids make up about 35% of the essential amino acid supply of muscle protein. It is therefore important that we get the right quantity and quality of amino acids in our diet. Together with other amino acids, they play a role in the formation of proteins that contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.
